The Fairfax County Champions of Character Awards program honors youth, coaches and parents for extraordinary service in pursuing victory with honor on and off the field of competition. Instituted by the Fairfax County Athletic Council, this program aims to support the ennobling tradition of amateur athletics in cultivating teamwork, leadership, good sportsmanship and community service.
Awards are presented to a male and female athlete, coach and parent in each supervisory district for having demonstrated extraordinary service in the athletic community while modeling the basic traits of good character: Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Trustworthiness, Citizenship and Fairness.
Meredyth Walker a member of the 2005 Girls NPL was recently awarded the 2018 Champions of Character Award represnting Gunston Soccer Club and the Mount Vernon District.
The award presenter had this to say about Miss Walker.
When one thinks of a Champion of Character, Meredyth Walker immediately comes to mind. Over the past several years, she has continually exhibited integrety, respect, sportsmanship and responsibility. She pushes herself to be the best on and off the soccer field.
While playing top level competitive soccer, which requires her to be at practice three or more times per week, Meredyth has maintained all A's and B's at Hayfield Secondary School. Last Spring she was recongnize as an exemplary student in Language Arts for her 7th grade class. Here work ethic is second to none.
Meredyth is involved in her community through her volunteer work with Gunston Soccer Club, helping with summer camps and working as a referee for both competitive and recreational soccer, as well as babysitting neighborhood children. She is both caring and trustworthy. Gunston Soccer Club could not ask for a better person to represent our clubs. Meredyth Walker is an asset not just to the clubs, but to the community.
In a recent interview Meredyth said that she is very humbled and honored to receive this award and hopes to continue playing, refereeing and working with younger players in the future to share her love of the game.
